performing error check on date values entered in a textbox

If you perform "Convert. ToDateTime" to the text of a textbox, the syntax should be yyyy-mm-dd. What is the syntax for performing a checking condition (so that I can output an error note if the values in the textbox are wrong rather than the whole server error screen appearing) such that I can check that the month doesn't exceed 12 and the day doesn't exceed 31 because a code such as: label1.text = Convert.ToDateTime(textbox1.text) would produce an error if the month exceeds 12 or the day exceeds 31. Thanks for the help. Why not use one of the Validator controls? There is a DataType check that can be applied to the CompareValidator (as I recall). I am not sure what it would do with yyyy-mm-dd (unless that is the format set up in regional settings) but in a pinch, you can do a custom validator...
Use the compareValidator, and set the Type to Date (making sure you also set the 'Control to Validate' property).

If you really really really want to do it in code (which is not advisable, but I have had to do it once or twice), then here is a little function I got from somebody:

Public Function IsDateValid(ByVal strDate As String) As Boolean
Try
' attempt parse
Dim dtParsed As DateTime = DateTime.Parse(strDate)
Return True
Catch ' parse failed
End Try
Return False
End Function

IsDateValid("200323") returns false
IsDateValid("20/12/2004") returns true

Not sure if it will work with yyyy-mm-dd, but try and and let us know.

permission denied error message

Hi,

We have a webservice that can log information to a text file on the local
machine. The ability to log information is configurable. The .net web service
is called from a vb dll. From the vb side of the fence, we're getting an
error message that indicates access is denied to the log file. The folder and
log file both have the asnet user set up with full control. Additionally the
parent folders have list access and read access for the user. The security
event log contains a record with the permissions being requested.

Additional info: the web service works on two other boxes with simular
configurations. The major difference is the box that doesn't work is in the
DMZ and does not have a domain controller.

Any ideas?

KenHi Ken,

In your webservice, do you allow or deny anonymous access?
if you don't deny anonymous access, you might need to
grant permossion to another account IUSR (Ineternet Guest
Account).

Permission denied error 2nd Post

New user of SQL
Everything is on the same machine
My error is close to the bottom
After reading it today, I can see there is a problem with 2 dbases
'PUBS' and 'Master'
There are also some comments from the group:
--microsoft.public.sqlserver.odbc-- subject: Permission Denied -- Thanks
for help guys

I was able to find a trial version of the Enterprise Manager.

It was suggested to make the post over in dotnet.framework. I am new to
SQL. I can see the following in the MSDE manager:

sql server(my machine name\??SDK)
after I right click on 'PUBS'
--Users/Roles/Public
--public
--machine_name\aspnet
--guest

guest is the only one with 5 check marks going across from left to right for
the following:
Create Table, Create View, Create SP, Create Default, Create Rule

the following 3 are blank:
Create Function, Backup DB, and Backup Log

public has just 1 check mark on
Create SP

machine_name\aspnet is blank from left to right.

CREATE DBASE right is not displayed.

How can I solve my Permission denied error problem?

Thanks for the help,
Taishi

--Comments--
Hi Tashi!

You can ue Enterprise manager to set the rights. Locate the table, and right
click. Select All Tasks, then Manage Permissions. Locate the user that you
are using in your connection object, and then grant the rights. I agree with
Greg that the web user should not normally have that level of permission.
One false move and your server and data could be toast. If you are really
trying to create a table, or attach a database, you should be doing that
through Enterprise Manager, and not the web interface.

Hello! Ken:

I posted that website on my other posting(Permission Denied). I will do
some more research and investigating but you told me that I had to install
it on a ASP.net web server?? I am a uninitiated, so I'm trying to grasp
the concept.

Hi Tashi!

You'll have to install it on a local ASP.net web server, and then use your
browser to go to the site.

Permission Denied Writing to a file

I'm getting a 'permission denied' error when I try to write to a file. I'm running Windows XP Professions, FAT32, and I've set the aspnet user to be an administrator. And I still get this error. I know it's not that the folder doesn't exist, because if I change the path to one that doesn't exist I get the appropriate error that it doesn't exist.

Help.

buzzWow! I hope this server is not exposed to the Internet in any way.
First, you should use NTFS and not FAT32 (there are no permissions on FAT32 disks).
And making ASPNET an administrator is something you should never do. You could edit the machine.config file instead and make the process use SYSTEM instead of ASPNET. I don't even recommend doing this, and you should really just give enough rights on the directories to ASPNET so that you can write to your file.
Does this help?
I'm just in development on my desktop for now, which is why it's FAT32, and the only reason why I made the ASPNET account an admin was to troubleshoot my permission denied error. That's why I mentioned it, because even with it being an admin I'm still getting this error.
You should use NTFS on your dev machines too. I doubt that you will be able to sort this one out except if you use NTFS. I haven't checked this, but I wouldn't be surprised if we used low permissions by default if the file system is Fat, as there are no permissions on this file system.
And 'low permissions' means no write permission, ever, anywhere? That would be remarkably restrictive, wouldn't it? Aren't there some IIS settings I can look at? I also went into my app in IIS and gave write permission in there and that didn't work either.

Thanks for your input.

buzz
Once again, I'm not sure about that at all.
But usually, a web site has no need to write files.
And it would be incredibly dangerous to allow writing to an unprotected file system by default.
I strongly recommend you use NTFS in all circumstances. Fat32 is only there for Win9x compatibility.
I see, well I'll look into converting to NTFS.

>> But usually, a web site has no need to write files.

Is this true? I'm not an expert, but what about uploading files, etc? Also, I want to write to a file for logging purposes, for when my database goes down.

Thanks for all your help!

buzz
Yes, that's why I said "usually".
Most sites don't need to upload files. And if you upload, you should do so in a directory that's not acessible from the web, for obvious security reasons, whenever possible. And you should always require reliable authentication when you allow for it.
Logging can be done using the System.Diagnostics namespace, using the standard Windows event logs.

permissions creating web application

The following error seems to plague a lot of people. Who has encountered this and what solutions did you find.

"Unable to create web project <name>. The UNC share <UNC> does not exist or you do not have access.

One suggestion I have seen a few times is create the app on the local machine and then publish to the server. I want to create the app on my develoment server, not on my local machine and then publish to a production box.

I noticed a post from one of this forums "ASP.net team" users stating something along the lines of "creating a web application is a snap just go to New Project --> .net web application". I laughed big time at that. I am in my fourth day of attempting this "snap" process. It works fine, but you have to make sure you have the correct privelages.. From the error it seems you don't have write permissions maybe?
yeah it is a permissions issue. The question is permissions for who? You have my local machine with VS.net installed. I log into a domain so I am assuming that the VS application is running with that account information.

I then try to create an application on a server outside a firewall and not part of the domain. That IIS server is running the show as far as the virtual directory and web application is concerned so I assume the account is IUSR_machine.

That to me seems to be a potential source of this problem.
Check if you have permissions on the directory you are trying to write to. I believe this is just directory permissions you are dealing with here.

Permissions Error .. ?

Normally, the data that I work with is on an SQL Server, which is
installed on the web server itself or another local server on the LAN. I
tried connecting to an access database on another server, which I could
fine when designing the page. But, when I ran the page on the web
server, I got this error:

The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file
'\\fileserv\database\transportation\trantrack2003B _testing.mdb'. It is
already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to
view its data.

I don't believe I could add permissions to this file for the ASP.NET
account on the web server to access it. How would I go about
'impersonating', as I've heard mentioned before, if this would solve my
problem?I don't believe I could add permissions to this file for the ASP.NET

Have a look under the web.config section of:

which should help.

Permissions Error When Accessing Access Database

When I attempt to access a Microsoft Access database from my website, I
recieve the following error:

Server Error in '/' Application.
------------------------

Security Exception
Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed
by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission
please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust

permission of type 'System.Data.OleDb.OleDbPermission, System.Data,

Take note that the description says that this can be fixed by modifying the
configuration file, which I am assuming is referring to the Web.config file.
I have successfully run this application on my machine using Visual Studio
2005's Development Server with the settings currently in the Web.config
file, so if modifying the Web.config file will fix it, what do I need to
change? Thanks.

Why do you use OleDb for MS Access?

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/li...connection.aspx
An application that creates an instance of the OleDbConnection object
can require all direct and indirect callers to have sufficient
permission to the code by setting declarative or imperative security
demands. OleDbConnection makes security demands using the
OleDbPermission object. Users can verify that their code has
sufficient permissions by using the OleDbPermissionAttribute object.
Users and administrators can also use the Code Access Security Policy
Tool (Caspol.exe) to modify security policy at the computer, user, and
enterprise levels. For more information, see Code Access Security and
ADO.NET.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0x4t63kb.aspx
I use OleDb for MS Access because of the namespaces that are included in the
..NET Framework (or that I have ever heard of from third parties)
System.Data.OleDb is the one that is supposed to be used when accessing a MS
Access database. The reason I am using MS Access for this website rather
than a higher quality database such as SQL Server or Oracle is because the
organization the site is for cannot afford anything else.

I have used System.Data.OleDb for MS Access databases in other sites I have
written, such as my personal website, with no problem, and any books that I
have read that use MS Access as their example database have as well, so I
know that it is the right one to use.

I have never had to deal with any of the objects you mention (except for
OleDbConnection, of course). Could you please either give me a code sample

I use OleDb for MS Access because of the namespaces that are included in the
.NET Framework (or that I have ever heard of from third parties)
System.Data.OleDb is the one that is supposed to be used when accessing a MS
Access database. The reason I am using MS Access for this website rather
than a higher quality database such as SQL Server or Oracle is because the
organization the site is for cannot afford anything else.
I have used System.Data.OleDb for MS Access databases in other sites I have
written, such as my personal website, with no problem, and any books that I
have read that use MS Access as their example database have as well, so I
know that it is the right one to use.
I have never had to deal with any of the objects you mention (except for

Well, obviously I am. When you join a server to a domain, the Domain Admin
group is automatically added to the local Administrators group. I verified
it to be sure that nothing had changed. I think it's really a permissions
problem somewhere.

Permissions problem sending mail

I just upgraded to a new dedicated server and Im getting an error when my web application attempts to send mail.

It's telling me the network service needs to have write permission, but it doesnt say where.

Anyone?

Thanks alot!
mike123if your using the smtp service in IIS , then you could try checking the folder permissions at:
\inetpub\mailroot\
perfect, thanks!

Permissions Problem?

I'm getting the following error on my web application, and Im really confused to as what the problem could be. My application pool is running under network services.

System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: Could not find a part of the path "E:\".

Here is the code that is causing the problem. Any suggestions?

'lets create the directory incase it doesnt exist
If Directory.Exists(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("rootDir") & "extrapics\" & subDir1 & "\") = False Then
Directory.CreateDirectory(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("rootDir") & "extrapics\" & subDir1 & "\")
End If

Any tips are greatly appreciated..

Thanks,
MikeIs this running on your machine? Is E a hard drive, or is it a network drive?

Brian
Hi Brian, - thanks for the response.

The E: is in fact on my machine, yes. Other applications are successfully running on it as well

Thanks again
mike123
Did you try writing out the full path to see where it was going? Maybe there is an error in the path:

Response.Write(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("rootDir") & "extrapics\" & subDir1 & "\")

Also, is this web application going to always run on your machine? If not, shared paths \\machine instead of e:\ are preferred.

Brian
Hi Brian,

This web application is always going to run on machine yes. I initially thought it was an error in the path as well due to the error return message however I have double checked and the path is perfectly fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks again
mike123
Does the ASPNET account have the permissions, or if your app declares impersonation, does that account have permissions?

Brian
Hi Brian,

The ASPNET account only has read access. My app does not declare impersonation I believe because I did not set it up. It would be in the web.config if configured for this, correct?

Internet Guest Account and Network Services have all permissions except full control.

Is this setup wrong? My Application pool is running under network services

Thanks very much for your help,

Mike123
anyone got any thoughts on this ? .. im COMPLETELY stuck :(
Are you running windows 2003?
Have you tried granting read access to the "network service" account?

Hi Fredrik2000,

Yes I am running windows 2003, and yes the network service has read access. I thought this might be the problem too, but does not seem to be.

Thanks for the help, any other suggestions are warmly welcomed :)

is there any other account I can give permissions to test on?
Is e: your system drive?
Is there a policy for folder traversal (is that the name), what I mean is if your user has
correct rights to a subdirectory and not to one of the folders it is located in...

Hi Fredrik2000,

Yes, the E: is a system drive.

As far as folder traversal (if thats what its called ;)), I set the permissions at the root level to help debug this with still no luck.

I just gave "Everyone" full control, and its still not working. I've debugged the values passed to the createdirectory procedure, and the path is correct.

I'm totally stuck on where to go with this . Any ideas?

Thanks again,
Mike123
